Tower Gardens tennis court to reopen after refurbishment

Two free to access tennis courts are ready to welcome back players after receiving a well-deserved make-over.

Work took place to improve the condition of the courts in Chelmsford’s Tower Gardens and make the facility more welcoming for players of all ages and abilities. Now the work is complete, the courts have reopened.

Upgrade works to improve access for all

Work to refresh the courts began in mid-September and focused on upgrading the existing provision. The tarmac was deep cleaned and patch repaired to give a smoother playing surface and treated with a special coating to improve its durability and provide an anti-slip, all-weather finish. Fresh white lines were painted to clearly mark the court boundaries and new net sockets, posts and nets were installed.

The old fencing has been replaced with robust metal ball stop fencing and a new tarmac pathway has been built to connect the court to the nearest footpath, making it easier to reach.

The tennis courts are now available for casual use during daylight hours.  You can find out more on the Love Your Chelmsford website.

The refurbishment works were funded by Chelmsford City Council.

Councillor Natacha Dudley, Cabinet Member for an Active Chelmsford says public sports facilities like this play an important role in helping people keep active and healthy:

“Outdoor sports facilities are vital for maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing in our community. By continuing to invest in new and improved facilities in our parks and green spaces, we can provide Chelmsford residents with valuable opportunities to stay active and connect with others.

"Public access sports courts and pitches make it easier for everyone to enjoy the benefits of regular exercise and team sport.”

Get active outdoors this autumn

From tennis courts to skateparks, outdoor gyms to playgrounds, there are plenty of fun ways to get outdoors and keep active across the district’s parks and green spaces.

If you enjoy team sports or exercising with friends, Andrews Park is home to a multi-use games area, hard-surfaced tennis court, and grass football pitches while Melbourne Park offers grass sports pitches and hard surface court areas for tennis, netball, and basketball. At Chelmer Park you’ll find synthetic pitches for football and hockey, a netball court and an outdoor gym.

Tower Gardens is also home to an innovative cycle skills circuit, and children and families can burn-off extra energy at the adventure cycleway at Baddow Hall Park or test their skateboarding skills at the skate parks in Central Park or Saltcoats Park. There’s also Harry the Otter’s walking nature trail to explore at Chelmer Valley Local Nature Reserve and the chance to climb, slide and spin at the award-winning adventure playground at Hylands Park.

You can find a detailed list of the sports facilities and playgrounds within Chelmsford district’s parks on the Love Your Chelmsford website.
