The Mousetrap to visit Chelmsford for its 70th anniversary

The world’s longest running play is coming to Chelmsford in 2023 as part of its 70th anniversary. The Mousetrap, the iconic murder mystery by Agatha Christie, is embarking on a major new tour of the UK and Ireland starting this September. The play will visit more than 70 venues, including all the cities it toured 70 years ago and a host of others.

To launch this special tour, all tickets for its Chelmsford run will be available for £25 until 10 March, a saving of £7 on top price seats. The whodunnit comes to the Civic between 3 and 8 July 2023 and the theatre’s interim director Lee Henderson says it’s a great opportunity for the city’s residents to see this classic production.

Christie plot has audiences hooked

Agatha Christie’s two act play is set in a country guesthouse, where seven strangers find themselves snowed in together as news spreads of a murder in London. When a young detective arrives, the guests discover that a killer is in their midst. Audiences are asked not to reveal the play’s secrets so that the mystery can be enjoyed by future theatre goers.

The Mousetrap premiered in 1952

The Mousetrap had its world premiere back in October 1952, in the same year that Elizabeth II came to the throne. It first played to Nottingham’s Theatre Royal with Richard Attenborough in the cast, before reaching the Ambassadors Theatre in London, where it stayed until 1974 before transferring to the larger St Martin’s Theatre next door. The show has broken every record in the history of theatre, becoming a true London institution.
