Historic photographs of Hylands Estate unearthed by Gooch family descendants

The descendants of a family that owned Hylands Estate during the early 20th century have unearthed photograph albums and documents relating to the history of the house and park, including photography of a visit by King George V in 1914.

The albums have been examined and are set to be loaned to the Essex Record Office, where they will be digitised and made available for the public to view.

Photographs document milestone events from Sir Daniel Gooch’s years at Hylands House

Sir Daniel Gooch owned Hylands House and Park from 1907 to 1920. During his ownership, Hylands regularly hosted events including society weddings and fetes, and welcomed many special guests. The recently discovered albums document some of these events, including some never-before-seen photographs.

One significant album records a memorable visit from King George V and Lord Kitchener to Hylands in 1914. During World War One, the house was converted into a Red Cross military hospital with the finest medical equipment, which Sir Daniel Gooch personally paid for. The King and Lord Kitchener made two visits during the war. Their October 1914 visit is detailed in photographs showing the king inspecting troops and speaking to wounded soldiers.

Sir Daniel was also a keen explorer throughout his life and accompanied Sir Ernest Shackleton on the first leg of his bid to cross Antarctica in 1914, but returned home early, suffering from severe frostbite. One photograph album documents his journey, featuring black and white photographs of what is believed to be the deck of the Endurance, as well as the rocky coastline of the Antarctic, and seals and penguins huddled in the snow.

Another album features photographs of the wedding of Sir Daniel and Lady Gooch’s own daughter, Phyllis Gooch to Mr Frank Parrish on 3 August 1920. Images captured by local photographer Fred Spalding show the wedding party and high society guests gathered on the back lawn of Hylands House to celebrate the occasion.

Family albums to be made accessible to the public

These incredible albums are precious Gooch family heirlooms that have been handed down the Gooch family to Paul Wilkin, the great-grandson of Sir Daniel Gooch through his mother, Julienne. In early 2026, Paul decided to look for a new home for the albums, where they can be properly preserved and enjoyed by the wider public. He contacted the team at Hylands Estate, who recommended loaning them to the Essex Record Office.

Edward Price, Assistant Manager at Hylands Estate, reflects on seeing the albums for the first time:

“With many previous owners throughout its history, Hylands Estate has some wonderfully colourful stories to share. We love hearing from families who have a connection to the house and so I was delighted to hear from Paul. These albums provide an incredible window into Hylands in years gone by. To see images of King George V visiting the Red Cross hospital situated in these same grounds over 100 years ago showcases the prominent position Hylands holds in our national history.”

In May, the albums were viewed by Hylands Estate staff and The Friends of Hylands House for the first time when Paul and his family were invited to attend Hylands’ Open Estate Day. During their visit, the family enjoyed a tour of the house and explored a temporary exhibition curated by The Friends about the Gooch family at Hylands.

The albums will now go on long-term loan at the Essex Record Office. The Friends of Hylands House have covered the costs of each album being digitised, which will allow members of the public to be able to access this part of Hylands’ history online. Archives Card holders will also be able to request to view the albums in person.

Paul is pleased to be able to share the albums with more people:

“I am personally delighted to loan these important albums to the Essex Record Office. As a family, we have much enjoyed having these beautiful photographs to look at over many years. But they are an important part of Hylands’ story, and I’d like to see them be enjoyed by more people who are interested in my ancestors and their time at Hylands Estate – from local historians to members of the public. The Essex Record Office is the perfect new home for them.

“During our recent visit to Hylands Estate, with my wife, Kristina, and my daughter, Samantha and her family, it was quite fascinating to see some of the information and materials that The Friends of Hylands House already hold on the Gooch family. I am pleased that we have been able to add to this knowledge through these historical albums.”

Albums join further photographs recently purchased by The Friends of Hylands House

These newly revealed photographs join other albums of the same period from Hylands’ history currently stored at the Essex Record Office.

This includes the wedding album of Dorothy Cadwell Taylor and Claude Grahame-White. Sir Daniel Gooch hosted this society wedding of the celebrated aviator on 27 June 1912. The wedding attracted extensive media attention after the groom and his friends arrived in style by landing their planes on the back lawn of the house.

An album of photographs capturing this extraordinary day, including shots of the bride, groom and guests posing alongside the plane, was recently purchased by The Friends of Hylands House for the benefit of the public. The album has been fully digitised and now lives at the Essex Record Office. You can read more about it and view the full album on the Essex Record Office website.
