Get to know Chelmsford’s woodlands

There’s nothing better than going to the forest and feeling branches and leaves crunch under your feet. Taking in the smell of crisp, fresh air and feeling fully immersed in nature’s brilliance.

When is the last time you went to the woods? If it’s hard to remember, make this summer the time to get out and visit Chelmsford’s green spaces. Children (and the young at heart) will love exploring and making dens.

Here is a list of some wonderful local woodlands in and near Chelmsford.

Danbury Country Park

Danbury Country Park is a stunning place to visit, filled with lakes, ancient woodland and meadows. The pathways make for ideal walks with friends and family, and there are great picnic spots as well. Abundant wildlife can be spotted as you walk beside the lakes, formal lawn garden and through the trees, so keep your eyes peeled.

Danbury Common is another great place to visit if you’re looking to get out in the open. Throughout the common, there are a number of walking routes that weave through the trees and fields. If you want to do more exploring here, there are opportunities to walk further to Lingwood Common and Blake’s Wood – you may need a map to help you navigate.

Galleywood Common

Galleywood has a vast expanse of countryside (47 hectares!) and ancient woodland walks to enjoy. The common links on to a beautiful forest which can be enjoyed by families, dog walkers, cyclists, horse riders and many more. The path will take you on a journey of peacefulness, which is great if you are feeling particularly stressed and need a calming escape.

Hylands Park

At Hylands Park, you won’t be disappointed with the biodiversity amongst the trees. Nearly a quarter of Hylands Estate is covered in woodland and there’s many different directions to follow. Some of the trees within the park are known to be at least 650 years old! The park is big, so you’ll want to come back for more!

Marconi Ponds Local Nature Reserve

This is a lovely area of woodland and ponds in central Chelmsford. The area is a perfect habitat for foxes, deer, small mammals, and a variety of bird species.

Local people are invited to volunteer with tasks ranging from practical conservation, helping with community events on the site or helping to promote and manage the project as part of the ‘Friends of Marconi Ponds’ group.
