Elections are coming up in Chelmsford

Elections will be held across Chelmsford on Thursday 6 May 2021. Who is being elected, and how can you vote?

One City Council seat is vacant

Chelmsford City Council runs most local elections, whether they’re for city council seats or not. It will be running this one too.

However, there is only one vacant seat in Chelmsford – Moulsham Lodge ward.

If you live in Moulsham Lodge, you can vote for your new city councillor on 6 May. The newly elected member will join the other Moulsham Lodge representative, Councillor David Jones.

Elect your County Councillors

Councillors are elected to Essex County Council every four years.

There are nine councillors who sit on the county council to represent Chelmsford residents. They look after different areas of Chelmsford.

You can vote for your county councillor on 6 May.

Vote for the next Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner

Police, Fire and Crime Commissioners (PFCCs) are elected across the country every four years. Their job is to make sure the local police and the fire and rescue service are meeting the needs of the community.

The PFCC elections were supposed to be held in 2020, but were postponed because of the pandemic. They will also be held on 6 May.

You might have a parish election too

Some areas also have parish and town by-elections. These are Great Baddow Parish Council (Rothmans Ward), South Woodham Ferrers Town Council (Woodville Ward) and Stock Parish Council.

How can I vote?

You need to register to vote by Monday 19 April. But if you registered to vote at the last election and haven’t moved house since, you don’t need to register again.

If you want to vote by post, you need to apply for a postal vote by 5pm on Tuesday 20 April.

If you need a proxy vote (someone else to vote on your behalf), you need to apply by Tuesday 27 April.
