Chelmsford’s parks win 17 Green Flag Awards in 2021

Seventeen of Chelmsford City Council’s main parks across the city have received the Green Flag status in 2021. Two new sites – Galleywood Common and Frankland Fields received a Green Flag for the first time this year.

The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces. It sets the benchmark for managing recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and the world. As the scheme celebrates its Silver Jubilee this year, a record-breaking 2,127 parks sites across the country received a Green Flag.

Additionally, Admirals Park, Hylands Estate, and Oaklands Park have been awarded the Green Heritage Accreditation – a special recognition for Green Flag Award winners that actively conserve and promote the historical features of their sites.

“It is heartening to know that Local Nature Reserves, such as Galleywood Common and Frankland Fields in South Woodham Ferrers, have been awarded Green Flag status alongside more formal parks and municipal gardens. It’s really important that Wildness is acknowledged as an asset, equally valued as ‘high quality’ green space.

Parks and green spaces are the backbone of our community. They play a vital role in boosting health and wellbeing – especially during these challenging times – but they’re also hugely important as habitat. We’re leading by example in Chelmsford, and the growing number of Green Flag parks right across the Chelmsford district reflects our commitment to ensuring access to high quality, local green spaces for everyone. Many congratulations to our Parks team, who care for them all year round and work tirelessly to achieve this prestigious recognition year after year.”

Cllr Rose Moore, Cabinet Member for Greener and Safe Chelmsford
