17 parks awarded Green Flag status in Chelmsford

Seventeen of Chelmsford City Council’s main parks across the city have been recognised by the Green Flag Award scheme for another year running as some of the best parks and green spaces in the UK.

The prestigious flags can be found across Chelmsford in parks including Galleywood Common, Oaklands Park, Chelmer Valley Nature Reserve and more.

What is a Green Flag Award?

A Green Flag Award is the international standard for parks and green spaces. The scheme recognises and rewards well-maintained parks, setting the benchmark for the management of parks and outdoor spaces. This year, 2208 winners across the UK will fly a Green Flag in their parks – a record-breaking number since the scheme began 26 years ago.

Why this Award is significant

Chelmsford has the highest number of Green Flag Awards in the East of England. Each green space offers visitors a unique experience, from their beautiful flower displays to their great facilities. The parks provide a sense of escapism and better quality of life for all who use them.

Recreational spaces have been vital these past few years, and this award reflects the hard work the volunteers and Chelmsford City Council park staff have put in to maintain them to the highest standard.

Galleywood Common and Frankland Fields are shining examples of wilder spaces that have been awarded Green Flags for their biodiversity value – one of the recognised criteria for Green Flag status. The benefits of re-connecting with nature are also proven for our own health and wellbeing, so it’s great that all our parks now include wilder areas, and so many people live close to a Green Flag park. We hope to see more Green Flags awarded, right across the Chelmsford district.
