Yesterday evening (Wednesday 19 May) saw Councillor Jude Deakin elected Chelmsford Mayor for 2021-22 at the first ever Annual Council meeting to be streamed live from the Civic Theatre. You may recognise Jude’s name, as she’s been the reigning Mayor for the past year!

Her past term as Mayor has been heavily impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, making it impossible for herself and the Deputy Mayor (Cllr Linda Mascot) to carry out their normal expected duties. The groups on the Council agreed it would be fair to extend their terms of office by another year, to give them an opportunity to raise more money for their charities and attend the face-to-face engagements they’ve missed out on.

This marks the first consecutive term of office for a Chelmsford Mayor since Councillor Frederick Langton in 1959.

On her election as Mayor of Chelmsford for a second year, Councillor Jude Deakin said, “I’m delighted that councillors have nominated me to serve another year, which I hope will mean many more visits to people and organisations across the district. Hopefully we will also be able to hold plenty of fundraising events for my charities, Helping Hands Essex, Mid and North East Essex Mind and Sanctus.”

The Mayor appointed her daughter Helen to be her Mayoress, also for a second year, and the Deputy Mayor’s husband Ian will support her as her Consort once again.

Despite a year full of restrictions, the Mayor and Deputy put a lot of effort into making the most of the past year. They attended 66 Zoom and Teams meetings with organisations ranging from Cubs to Rotary Clubs. They also managed to attend 112 actual engagements in and around Chelmsford, including the opening of new businesses and celebration events.
