Work continuing on Boreham Interchange and A12

Vital work to improve the Boreham Interchange, north-east of Chelmsford, will continue until Autumn 2021.

A new relief road is being built to link Boreham Interchange to Essex Regiment Way. It will also give access to the planned new railway station at Beaulieu.

So this can happen, work is now underway to ‘signalise’ the roundabout. Workers are adding new traffic signals and creating more room for better walking and cycling routes.

Countryside Zest, the company developing Beaulieu, is bringing forward the work.

Most of the roadworks are being done 24 hours a day to reduce the length of the disruption. The existing lanes will generally stay open, although some short overnight closures will be needed.

A12 to be widened from Boreham to Marks Tey

Highways England have also announced details of a project to widen the A12 from Boreham Interchange to Marks Tey.

The section that will be widened is between junctions 19 and 25. As you’ll know if you live in Chelmsford, the A12 is a lifeline to Essex and an important part of the national economy – among other things, it connects Felixstowe and Harwich ports to London. But it struggles to cope with peak traffic and often sees delays and low speeds.

The new project includes proposals to reduce congestion and make journey times more reliable. It suggests ways to smooth the flow of traffic by helping the road to cope with breakdowns and accidents.

It also aims to improve safety by closing off private accesses onto the A12 and creating alternatives for those who use them. Safer routes away from the A12 are also included for cyclists, walkers and horse riders.

The proposals need to be seen and commented on by the public before they can be agreed. Keep an eye out for consultation later this year. In the meantime, you can visit the Highways England website for more information.
