Thousands of knitted poppies needed for Chelmsford poppy festival

Knitted Poppies For Remembrance

Keen knitters, crocheters and crafting enthusiasts are encouraged to take part in a major creative tribute ahead of Remembrance Day 2026. The city council is working with Chelmsford CVS to gather thousands of handmade poppies to be used for a series of moving displays and decorations across Chelmsford.

Whether you’re a seasoned knitter, a casual crocheter, or someone who has never worked with wool before, everyone is welcome to contribute.

Participants are invited to use any pattern they prefer, including a choice of knitted and crocheted templates provided by Chelmsford CVS. If you want to take part but need help getting started, you can attend an upcoming ‘Poppy-a-thon’ where beginners can access help from others!

If crafting isn’t your thing, you can still support the initiative by donating a ball of red double‑knit wool for others to use, to ensure there’s enough material for the thousands of poppies needed.

A city adorned in red

The handmade poppies will be used to decorate some of Chelmsford’s most recognisable locations, including Shire Hall, Chelmsford Market and High Chelmer Shopping Centre. Many local businesses will be participating and the city centre’s lampposts and railings will have poppy décor too.

Special movable installations will also tour the city before being brought together at the Civic Centre War Memorial for Remembrance Day services. These displays will feature QR codes and collection points so visitors can donate directly to the Royal British Legion.

Cllr Stephen Robinson, Leader of Chelmsford City Council, praised the initiative, saying:

“Chelmsford has a proud tradition of coming together in meaningful ways, and this project captures that spirit beautifully. Every poppy, whether knitted, crocheted, or donated as wool, represents someone’s time, care, and respect. I’m looking forward to seeing our city come alive with this powerful expression of remembrance and community.”

Join a community ‘Poppy-a-thon’

Crafters of all ages and abilities are invited to the Poppy-a-thon on Tuesday 2 June, held at Moulsham Lodge Community Trust from 10am to 4pm. The event is a relaxed drop-in day where residents can knit and crochet together over tea, coffee, and conversation. A short talk from the Royal British Legion will also feature, providing a thoughtful moment of reflection. Beginners are encouraged to join in.

More ‘Poppy-a-thons’ are being planned for later in the year, including a hopefully record-breaking knitting event at Chelmsford Cathedral, so watch this space for more details.

The Chelmsford BID (Business Improvement District) is a proud supporter of the poppy festival and encourages local crafters to pick up their knitting needles.

“This project is a beautiful example of what makes Chelmsford so special. When our community comes together – residents, visitors, and local businesses alike – we create something truly meaningful. The poppy displays will not only honour remembrance, but they’ll also draw people into the city centre, supporting our brilliant independent shops, cafés, and retailers. Every stitch represents connection and creativity in Chelmsford, and BID businesses are delighted to play a part in bringing this tribute to life.”

Sara Tupper, Chelmsford BID Chief Executive

Pick a poppy pattern

You may use any pattern you prefer, but below are reliable options for all skill levels:

Important things to please note:

  • Do not attach plastic buttons to the centre of your poppies as they need to be environmentally friendly.
  • Be sure to leave a 'tail' of a few inches attached. This is so each poppy can easily be attached to a display.
  • If you'd like to make a white poppy, as a symbol of peace and remembrance, or a purple poppy, to remember the animals that have served and suffered in conflicts, then these would be most welcome too.

Where to send completed poppies

Please deliver or send your completed poppies to: Chelmsford CVS, Burgess Well House, Coval Lane, CM1 1FW or Chelmsford City Council (front reception desk), Civic centre, Duke Street, CM1 9SW.
