Popular “Rocket Park” gets a makeover

The new and improved Springfield Hall play area, known locally as “Rocket Park” is now open!

The newly refurbished play area boasts several upgrades and improvements, making it more inclusive and accessible for children of different abilities.

The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Jude Deakin officially launched the park earlier this week.

Rocket Park upgrades include sensory features

There are two areas in the park; an infant area and junior area. The infant area is suitable for children aged two to six, whereas the junior area caters to children aged seven to twelve.

Some of the upgrades include:

• 100% fully surfaced play area, allowing the park to be used in various weather conditions
• Addition of key sensory elements such as gliding, spinning, balancing and springing
• A vibrant, jungle-themed design

Design chosen by public vote

The overall design of this play area was a result of a public vote last year. More than 200 local residents including children took part in the selection process. An overwhelming majority wanted the iconic rocket to stay.

“The open space right next door – Chelmer Valley Local Nature Reserve – already supports a wide range of birds, mammals and insects so I’m delighted that we can bring wildness even closer to “Rocket Park”. The eight trees we’ve already planted will be complemented by native wildflower meadow, giving a home to wildlife, celebrating seasonal shifts, and growing with the children year on year."
