Mayor of Chelmsford sends letter of condolence on the death of Prince Philip
Councillor Jude Deakin, Mayor of Chelmsford, has sent a letter of condolence on the city’s behalf following the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, last Friday morning.
Ordinarily, Books of Condolence would open at that time for members of the public to sign. However, due to coronavirus restrictions the Mayor is asking local residents to please sign the national e-book of condolence. You can find it at the www.royal.uk website.
The funeral will take place on Saturday. A one-minute silence will be held from 3pm to 3.01pm on Saturday. If you are near Chelmsford city centre, you may hear the ‘maroons’ (a ceremonial firing sound) announcing the minute’s silence.
Whilst floral tributes are not being encouraged by the Palace due to social distancing, if people insist on laying flowers, an area is being set aside in Bell Meadow, next to Central Park in the city centre. Any flowers laid at other parks and sites around the city will be respectfully and carefully moved to this area.
Flags at Chelmsford City Council buildings will be flown at half-mast during the period of national mourning, which is eight days long.
Cllr Deakin said: “It is with deep sadness and regret that I announce the death of Prince Philip.
“On behalf of Chelmsford City Council, I express our sorrow at the Prince’s passing, and I know our residents will feel the same way. I would also like to express my condolences to Prince Philip’s family.
“As we are still under coronavirus restrictions, please avoid gathering together or laying wreaths, but we understand that many residents will wish to show their mourning and we encourage members of the public to sign the virtual book of condolences.”
