Local actors sought for new R4J production

If you’re a young Chelmsford performer looking for a break at the city’s main theatre, this could be your chance. Chelmsford City Theatres are looking for actors for a new run of their dynamic version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

R4J is set in the present day with an edited text and it aims to resonate with a younger audience. The production had a successful run in July 2019, with the Montagues and Capulets facing off outside the theatres in Marconi Plaza, before moving inside to the Civic Theatre.

Actors needed for new production

The theatres are seeking local actors who are over 18 to audition for R4J 2021. Artistic Director Ian Knowles says it’s a great opportunity for up-and-coming actors to make their mark.

This is a story about the pressures facing young people and the energy you get from newly graduated performers is amazing – it really helps the audience feel a connection with the story. We are, of course, open to applications from more seasoned actors too. Get your auditions to us so we can start making theatre again!”

Send in a recording

If you’d like to apply, you have until Friday 11 June to do so. You’ll need to send in a recording of a minute or less telling the producers who you’d like to play at the start, followed by a clip of you performing a classic monologue of your choice.

Upload your video and a CV to a file sharing platform like Dropbox, Google Drive or WeTransfer and email links to your uploads to artsmarketing@chelmsford.gov.uk. It may sound obvious, but don’t forget to include your name and contact information on your CV so the theatres can get in touch with you. The second round of auditions will take place on Saturday 19 June.

R4J rehearsals start in August

The production has been made possible thanks to funding from Arts Council England and Chelmsford City Theatres will be honouring Independent Theatre Council and Equity rates of pay.

Members of the cast will be paid for 14 days of rehearsal time between 26 August and 18 September, along with 9 performances from 20-25 September. If you’re a member of the cast, you’ll have to commit to being available to attend all of the rehearsals and you’ll be working alongside local young offenders who will be on hand to help with research as you explore your role.
