The second longest running play in West End history, The Woman In Black, is coming to Chelmsford Theatre from 3-7 February 2026 as part of a new UK tour.

Chelmsford Theatre members have 48 hours of priority booking from today (10 February) to grab their seats, with general sale opening from 10am on Wednesday 12 February.

West End’s second longest running play graces Chelmsford stage during second UK tour

Based on the 1983 novel by Susan Hill, the production follows Arthur Kipps, a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black. He engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. This gripping stage adaptation of Hill’s original novel is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror.

The Woman In Black was first performed on stage in Scarborough in 1987. In 1989 it opened in London’s West End, where it ran for 33 years until 2023, making it the second longest running non-musical play in West End history after Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap.

Having now been seen by over seven million people worldwide, the critically-acclaimed stage adaptation embarks on its second UK tour in 2026, after first touring in 2023.

Chelmsford Theatre Director Rhys Thomas is proud to be bringing another major production to Chelmsford, especially one with such a renowned history:

“The Woman In Black is an absolute classic in theatre history, having gripped audiences in London and around the world for decades, and I’m so proud to be bringing it to Chelmsford next year.

“This is our fifth major London production to come to Chelmsford in recent years, after receiving The Mousetrap, Blood Brothers, Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) and, very soon, Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical. Such renowned shows have become a core part of Chelmsford Theatre’s programming at this point, giving Essex audiences the chance to experience a taste of the West End and Broadway closer to home. The theatre really has come a long way in the last couple of years since its refurbishment.”
