Free family fun at Chelmsford’s Recycling Open Day

Chelmsford’s recycling and waste depot is opening its doors for a day of free family fun to help people learn about keeping Chelmsford green and clean! On Saturday 31 August, from 10am to 2pm, Freighter House in Chelmsford is hosting its much-anticipated Recycling Open Day, sharing information about the recycling and street cleaning services in Chelmsford.

Ever wondered what happens to the bottles, cans, and paper you toss into your recycling bins and bags? This is your chance to find out. Bring the whole family along to explore the fascinating world of recycling, waste management and street cleaning right here in Chelmsford. This day is always a hit with youngsters, who will have the opportunity to sit in recycling and street care trucks and even win some prizes!

What’s in store?

Explore the depot

Get a first-hand look at the action with guided tours around the depot. You’ll see the recycling bays where materials are sorted, visit the vehicle workshops, and discover what it takes to keep Chelmsford clean. It’s an eye-opening experience that will give you a new appreciation for what happens after your bins are emptied.

See the big machines!

Got a little one (or maybe a not-so-little one) who dreams of being a truck driver? Now’s their chance! Children and adults alike can hop into the driver’s seat of our recycling and street care trucks.

Meet the crew

For many of our youngest residents, the recycling and waste collection crew are nothing short of superheroes. This open day offers a unique opportunity to meet these everyday heroes in person. The friendly crew are happy to answer questions about where your recyclables go and how they manage their operations cleaning 1,400 miles of road and paths.

Fun, games, and prizes

Put your recycling knowledge to the test with some fun quizzes and competitions, and you may walk away with a prize.
