Councils pay tribute to Chelmsford councillor

Councillor Mackrory

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Councillor Mike Mackrory.

Councillor Mackrory represented the Springfield division of Essex County Council in Chelmsford since he was elected in 2005. In that time, he served as Leader of the Opposition for many years. He also served on nearly every committee at different times, taking on the roles of chairman, vice chairman and member.

Councillor Mackrory served a long tenure on Chelmsford City Council from 1995. There he became Leader of the Council, Leader of the Opposition and a Cabinet Member. He also became Mayor of Chelmsford in 1999.

Decades of devoted service

Councillor Mackrory was a highly respected and valued member of both councils who worked tirelessly for the residents of Springfield, Chelmsford and Essex. Our thoughts are with his family, who along with friends and colleagues will greatly miss him.

Nicole Wood, Chief Executive at Essex County Council, said:

“Councillor Mackrory was a great councillor, respected by members and officers, who filled his role with total professionalism, be it in scrutiny or opposition. I will remember him for the way he always took time to be thankful and make others feel appreciated for their work. That kindness has a lasting impact.

“I know many colleagues will have fond memories of Councillor Mackrory and I know he will be very much missed.”

Nicole Wood, Chief Executive at Essex County Council

Nick Eveleigh, Chief Executive at Chelmsford City Council, said:

“Cllr Mackrory devoted decades of his life to serving Chelmsford residents and he was regarded with huge fondness by his City Council colleagues. His long contribution as a public servant began more than thirty years ago when he was first elected to the then Borough Council, and his work has made a difference to countless people in our city. Our thoughts are with those who knew Cllr Mackrory best and loved him most, and we share their sense of loss at this sad news.”
