Chelmsford’s Remembrance Sunday Parade 2024

Multiple flags being held outwards in front of war memorial
Military representatives stand in a line holding flags by the Duke Street War Memorial at the 2023 Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade.

This year’s Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service will take place on Sunday 10 November at the War Memorial on Duke Street, Chelmsford from 10.50am.

The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Janette Potter, will join veterans and members of the public to honour those who sacrificed their lives during past conflicts and pay respect to those who continue to serve our country’s Armed Forces today.

The service will be conducted by The Very Reverend Paul Kennington, Interim Dean of Chelmsford with contributions from members of the Chelmsford inter-faith community. Wreaths will also be laid by the Mayor of Chelmsford, Armed Forces representatives, and Chelmsford community groups. If your organisation would like to lay a wreath, please email your request to mayors.office@chelmsford.gov.uk.

A two-minute silence, marked by the firing of the maroons, will be observed at 11am on both Sunday 10 and Monday 11 November. Following the service on 11 November, the Parade will march off along Rainsford Road before returning to march past the War Memorial, where the Mayor will take the salute.

The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Janette Potter, invites Chelmsford residents to wear their poppies with pride this November and join her at this year’s Service of Remembrance:

“When we think of our Armed Forces, the first thing that comes to mind for many of us is the past World Wars and other major conflicts since 1945. The acts of bravery committed then must be honoured and remembered, but we must also remember that each and every day our current Armed Forces continue to serve and protect. Whether that’s working to prevent and counteract terrorist activities, delivering humanitarian aid overseas, or supporting our emergency services at home.

“This November, I encourage Chelmsford residents to purchase and wear your poppies with pride, and to join us for the annual Remembrance Parade and Service. All money raised from poppy sales goes towards supporting members of our Armed Forces who in turn work so tirelessly to support our peace and freedom each day.”

Councillor Janette Potter, Mayor of Chelmsford

Please note parts of Duke Street will be closed from 10am on Sunday 10 November but access to Fairfield Road Car Park from Coval Lane will still be available. As in previous years, there will also be a shelter provided for elderly and disabled ex-service men and women.

The Order of Service, which includes hymns and prayers, is available to download from Chelmsford City Council’s website at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/remembrance
