Chelmsford falls silent in tribute to war heroes

Chelmsford’s annual Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade took place at the War Memorial on Duke Street yesterday.

Residents, veterans, members of the Royal British Legion and community group representatives joined the Mayor of Chelmsford, Cllr Sue Dobson, to pay tribute to service personnel who have died during conflicts. The service also recognised the brave contributions of those who continue to serve the Armed Forces today.

The Very Reverend Nicholas Henshall, Dean of Chelmsford, led the service, which featured hymns sung by the Chelmsford Cathedral Choir and readings from members of Chelmsford’s inter-faith community.

A two-minute silence was observed at 11am, marked at the beginning and end with the firing of maroons.

Afterwards, the Mayor and Colonel (Retd) Thomas TD DL from the Royal Anglian Regiment laid the first poppy wreaths. The Mayor bowed her head in a mark of respect, while Colonel Thomas gave salute. Military and community group representatives laid further wreaths at the foot of the memorial.

Following the service, the Mayor received salute from the parade of service personnel and veterans as they marched past the memorial.
