Free event for older people in Chelmsford and Maldon

Older People's Event

A free event is being held by Maldon District Council and Chelmsford City Council to provide helpful information and fun activities for older people in the community.

The Senior Safety and Silver Monday event will give over 65s an opportunity to meet new people while giving them useful resources to help tackle issues such as loneliness and isolation.

What to expect

The event will be taking place on Monday 3 October from 10am-4pm at Maldon Stadium in celebration of 120 over 65s living in the Chelmsford and Maldon area.

There will be a range of engaging talks about safety and wellbeing, as well as a free lunch and refreshments available throughout the day. Different activities and entertainment will be going on too, with a chance to connect with others in the community.

Supporting partners include, Essex Police, County Fire & Rescue Service, Essex County Council, Community Volunteer Service, Moat Foundation, U3A, Active Essex, Citizens Advice Bureau, Crimestoppers, Macmillan, Essex Libraries and Essex Adult Social Care.

"Loneliness has a huge impact on a person’s health and wellbeing. That’s why free events like these are vitally important to connect people together in the community, especially those from an older generation who may not get out of the house as often as they used to."

Councillor Ann Davidson, Cabinet Deputy for Healthy Living and the City Council’s Older Persons’ Champion

What’s it all about?

This event is part of a national day to overcome loneliness amongst older people that is held around the first Sunday in October called ‘Silver Sunday’. On one day every year, Silver Sunday provides older people an opportunity to get out of the house, try new things and meet new people as well as to find out about local services that are available throughout the year.

Silver Sunday is supported by Sir Simon Milton Foundation charity. More details can be found at silversunday.org.uk.

"Some people don’t like to admit they’re feeling lonely, and Silver Sunday is a positive way to do something about it by meeting new people. You’re never too old to try something new and Silver Sunday is the perfect opportunity."

Silver Sunday Founder, Lady Christabel Flight
