Prestigious athletics event comes to Chelmsford

Chelmsford Sport And Athlectics Centre Running Track

The British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) outdoor athletics championships will be held in Chelmsford this coming bank holiday weekend.

Athletics championships start on 30 April

More than 1,500 athletes from universities and colleges across the UK will be competing at Chelmsford Sport and Athletics Centre from Saturday 30 April. The championships begin with the triple jump and 1500m heats and they end with the 100m and 400m sprint relays on Monday.

Event is a chance to find form

The athletes competing will be looking to find form at the start of the new athletics season.

Some will be aiming to represent Great Britain at the World Championships being held in Oregon in July, and a few weeks later at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

CSAC’s manager, Justin Hubbard, says hosting such a prestigious event is great for the centre.

“It’s a real coup for CSAC and the region to be able to stage this annual athletics event, which is the highest level of competition held at our facilities. BUCS is an opportunity for athletes to be recognised for future major events, so it’s an important early season fixture in the athletics calendar.

"The standard of competition on show is going to be very high as we’ll have some of the best young athletes competing here over the weekend. It’s also an excellent chance for the centre to show off the first class athletics facilities we have here.”

Justin Hubbard, CSAC Manager

If you love athletics and would like to watch the action, spectators are welcome to attend the event. CSAC is has plenty of parking and if you prefer to walk, it’s a 25 minute stroll from Chelmsford city centre. There are a number of cycle routes too.
