Volunteering opportunities at the City Council

There are many volunteering opportunities available at Chelmsford City Council. From becoming a walks leader, supporting the Museum, to looking after our parks and nature reserves.

You can volunteer on a regular basis, or whenever you have some spare time and wish to lend a helping hand. If you’re an enthusiastic individual, that’s all that matters – whatever your skillset may be. Getting out in your local community is a fantastic way to meet new people. It’s also a way to gain a new hobby or skill and feel a sense of achievement.

Become a walks leader

The Heart and Sole programme is always looking for help to lead the regular and one-off circular walks throughout the Chelmsford area. You don’t need any particular experience, but it is beneficial to have a friendly and welcoming attitude. It is also helpful to have good communication skills, the ability to take control and be assertive when needed.

Being a walk leader means you will act as either a front leader, a middle marker or back marker during organised walks. There is training involved and you can volunteer weekly, monthly, or more frequently if you want to. However, the community sport and wellbeing team do ask that you commit to a 13-week rota once you are trained. Looking after our parks and nature reserves

The work of volunteers helps to make the parks and nature reserves a better place for both the humans that visit them, to the nature that lives within them.

Sessions are led by skilled staff, and you can help in many ways. You can help to manage habitats, surveying wildlife, planting trees, assisting on a litter pick day and more. If you would like to find out more about the volunteer projects, go to the Love Your Chelmsford website.
