An annual Memorial Day is being held to commemorate the Holocaust during World War Two and other genocides throughout history.

The Chelmsford Jewish Community with support from Chelmsford City Council, will be streaming a free event on Facebook from 7pm on Thursday 8 April 2021 that all are welcome to attend.

A commemoration event is usually held on 27 January in recognition of the National Holocaust Memorial Day. This is a day of remembrance for the millions of victims killed in the Holocaust and other genocides and is marked each year on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The January commemoration had to postpone due to the global pandemic. It was hoped an in-person commemoration event would have been possible at a later date, but due to the current restrictions, they are going ahead with an online event. Chelmsford City Council and the Chelmsford Jewish Community will be recognising the Memorial Day through their Holocaust Memorial Commemoration.

The new event date of Thursday 8 April is still significant. Known as Yom Hashoah, it is Israel’s day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust.

This year has seen the passing away of many more of the dwindling group of survivors and witnesses to the Holocaust. We have an obligation to ensure that we keep alive the memory both of those who survived and of those who did not. This commemoration provides an opportunity to learn and reflect

The Holocaust Memorial Commemoration is being streamed via Chelmsford City Council’s Facebook event at 7pm on Thursday 8 April 2021. It is a free event that all are welcome to attend. Register your interest for the Facebook event.
